From Onetangi’s beautiful white sand shoreline trek up through the jurassic Forest & Bird reserve as the light begins to dwindle and listen to the evening birdsong. Reach the top of Trig Hill to take in the bright lights of Auckland before heading across country and back into bush. A steep ‘rope’ climb over tranquil Awaawaroa valley then over paddocks before dropping down onto easier terrain. A long flat metal road meanders alongside a brook and is the perfect opportunity to turn off the headlamps and soak up the dark silence. Once back onto sealed road there is a long steady climb past paddocks and slumbering cattle. At the top of the hill drop down back through the reserve to the sea.
Enjoy a well-earned local wine or beer at Charlie Farleys (noted for great live music) before tucking up for a good night’s sleep!
NB. Head torches to be worn.
