Forest & Bird was founded in 1923 and was established to protect native forest and birds.
There are 38 reserves and sanctuaries around the country, three of those reserves are on Waiheke Island. Atawhai te Whenua overlooks Matiatia Bay, Onetangi Reserve which featured in last year’s festival is very popular and the more remote Te Haahi Goodwin on the way to Orapiu, will be explored this year.
This walk Pioneer Country will be on Sunday 30 October with a start time at the Pioneer Cemetry, Orapiu at 10.30am. It is quite a tough walk and will take around two hours. There should be time to explore the Pioneer Cemetry before the return journey. Book this walk.
If you are coming from Auckland take the 9am ferry to Matiatia where you will be met by a Walking Ambassador who will direct you to the ‘Hopper’ bus. There will be a charge for this special bus service.
