Starting at the Waiheke Historical Village and Museum, we cross the tidal estuary between Rangihoua and Horopito maunga, an area with a rich history of Māori occupation.

From here, the landscape changes beautifully as we make our way through open countryside, native bush and across a forested ridge. A winding descent through established forest brings us to peaceful Azolla Pond, a lovely spot known for its tranquillity and birdlife.

We then follow bush-lined tracks and streams before emerging onto the western slopes of Rangihoua.  If you chose to, the climb to the top is well worth the effort, with wonderful views stretching across the Hauraki Gulf.

And the good news – it’s mostly downhill from here! We finish back at the Waiheke Historical Village and Museum, where there’ll be time to explore, enjoy a cup of tea and discover a little more about Waiheke’s colourful past.

A lovely mix of history, native bush, birdlife and big island views.

Limited parking is available at the Museum (around 8 cars), with additional roadside parking. Regular Onetangi buses stop right outside, so we encourage you to take the bus where possible.
